Reading and Phonics
Each week we will have a new story from our reading book. On Monday, I will send home a vocabulary list that your child needs to practice saying out loud to you. When he/she is comfortable with saying the words please sign the paper and return it to school with your child. He/she will read the list to me when they have returned it to school. It is important that your child practices these words and understands their meanings. This will help with fluency and comprehension of the story. The reading book will come home on every Tuesday. We will have a weekly test over the story on Friday. The test will be over the story, vocabulary words (highlighted), phonics, and comprehension skills for the week.
Each day your child should be bringing home a book from our classroom or school library if he/she has returned the previous day book. Please listen to your child read the book, sign the slip, and return to school. These books go toward our reading goal which is 30 books each nine weeks.
Math
Our math series is called "My Math" which is aligned to the state Common Core State Standards with the most up-to-date technology for the students. I will send home a login for each student so you can work on the lessons at home. In the math book, the students will learn new skills and have a test after each chapter.
The students will have time tests to practice their facts throughout the week.
Language and Writing
In Language, we will focus on the different types of sentences (telling, command, asking, and exclamatory). We will learn about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Through the year we will incorporate all these skills into our writing. In addition to these skills, we will have fun activities that go along with stories that I will read aloud to the students.
Spelling
Every Monday a spelling list will be sent home. It will be a list of our spelling words, Word Wall Words (highlighted), sentences, and two challenge words. The test will be every Friday over the sentences and the two impromptu sentences I make up from the word wall words. The two challenge words come from holidays, reading, science, months, and math. They are given as bonus words so they will not be marked down for missing them. If your child spells the word correctly he/she will get a bonus point on their test.
Science and Social Studies
In Science and Social Studies, we will be studying lots of different topics. In science, we will be using our text book along with hands on activities in the class. The students will take a test after each chapter. In Social Studies, we will be using our Scholastic News to learn more about our world. Technology is another source that will be used in the classroom for both subjects.
